Enigma Semiconductor Announces Mesh Interconnect Chip for Triple Play Broadband at the Access Edge

Cross Platform Scalability is Key for Advancing Broadband Edge Market

SANTA CLARA, CA – October 16, 2006 – Enigma Semiconductor, an emerging technology leader in next-generation switching silicon, today announced availability of a new member of its HybriCore™ Switch chipset product line, aimed at access edge infrastructure equipment designed to carry high-bandwidth triple play services such as IPTV and VoIP which are the key drivers in the broadband access market. According to Infonetics Research, the number of IPTV subscribers in North America will increase more than 40-fold between 2005 and 2009.

Based on Enigma's HybriCore Architecture, the EN6150 Mesh Expansion chip is available now, adding support for mesh and multi-chassis system configurations. In combination with the EN6200 family of Fabric Manager devices this chipset enables 10G, 20G, 40G and 80G mesh blades to be developed for use in small network switches and routers. This chipset delivers the same scalability, density and line rate, fully non-blocking attributes for mesh and multi-chassis systems as Enigma's line of HybriCore products optimized for use in chassis configurations where dedicated switch cards are the norm.

"Service providers are looking to implement technologies that will help them expand their offerings toward value-add broadband services that include voice over IP, (VoIP), IPTV and other integrated entertainment choices," said Jeff Heynan, directing analyst for IPTV at Infonetics. "Yet, with the deployment of these services in their infancy, these systems must be capable of delivering new services to increased numbers of users over time."

"The business drivers for the broadband edge sector in turn drive network equipment vendors' product plans," said Rob Sturgill, president and CEO of Enigma Semiconductor. "This product set is a result of customer feedback for a common, efficient, scalable architecture that can span a broader set of system topologies, bandwidth and services. System OEMs are finding it critical to leverage R&D developments across multiple system configurations to improve time-to-market and drastically reduce development costs."

About the HybriCore Product Line

Enigma's HybriCore chipset family initially includes packet switches and fabric managers that can be mixed and matched to allow system architects to make tradeoffs based on system power, performance and cost requirements.

The newly available EN6150 is a mesh interconnect chip intended for very compact access edge implementations that require very high performance, high bandwidth and massive scalability with core infrastructure equipment. System OEMs can develop mesh systems that support up to fourteen, 80Gbps line cards – at least twelve times greater than is possible with other merchant silicon offerings. Additionally, the technology can scale to support multiple chassis while delivering line rate, fully non blocking performance.

The EN6210 Fabric Manager is a 10 Gbps single chip line card solution, the EN6220 Fabric Manager is a 20 Gbps single chip line card solution and the EN6240 is a 40 Gbps single chip line card solution. No external buffer memory is required in designs based on these fabric managers, which minimizes power dissipation and PCB footprint. The EN6200-family of fabric managers incorporates industry-standard interfaces for direct connectivity to a range of network processor units (NPUs), ASICs, and specialty packet processing devices.

HybriCore chipsets excel in performance and scalability by switching complete packets across the backplane, without the inefficiencies introduced by segmentation and reassembly schemes typical of legacy switching architectures. An intelligent scheduler ensures packets are transferred back-to-back across the serial links, resulting in bandwidth utilization of greater than 98 percent. The scheduler also ensures high priority packets are switched with very low latency, even when the switch is concurrently transporting large packets. The highly reliable backplane serial links can operate over a broad range of data rates to enable system architects to make a number of system power and performance tradeoffs.

All devices are available for sampling now. Pricing is dependent on volume and is available upon request. Contact Enigma's sales team at sales@enigmasemi.com or phone +1 408 567 0536 ext. 110.
